What features do you want to see in PropertyGrid for WPF?

July 16, 2008 at 12:12 AM
by Bill Henning (Actipro)

Now that Actipro WPF Studio v4.0 is out, we've started on PropertyGrid for WPF development again.

We already have a good core codebase working for the PropertyGrid for WPF control and have done a lot of planning on its feature set, but we want to hear your thoughts as well.

What features do you want to see in our upcoming PropertyGrid for WPF control?

Please email our support team with your comments, we'd love to hear them!

A mechanism for easily plugging in editors for custom data types, as well as overriding the editors used for standard data types.  This capability should be accessible from XAML (no imperative code necessary).  Naturally, the editor model should support validation and a means of providing useful error feedback.

1) Do not want to have to rely on class member attributes in order to populate the grid.  I assume data templates would be used for WPF anyway.

2) Ability to embed custom editors for various data types

3) Dynamically generate content for drop-down controls

4) Keeping with the "cool" factor of WPF, some subtle animations for expanding/collapsing groups would be nice.

Given your track record for great controls, I'm sure these have already been included.

I think Mike hit it right on the head.  Custom editors from XAML would be great.

I'm curious as to how collection types will be handled.  And what of nested complex types?  Will "nested" grid sections be shown as they were in the WinForms PropertyGrid?  I was never very fond of how that control handled these scenarios.

Hi Mike,

For inital release of the PropertyGrid, our current plan is to duplicate the WinForms PropertyGrid functionality. We are still working on a design for collection editing, and are open to any ideas you have. "Complex" properties will be expandable.

Also we will have support for custom property and category editors, which can be used to provide a custom interface for modifying "complex" properties.

Don't stick to Winforms's look & feel. Be innovative and provide more decent control.

Once we had to implement our own hierarchical FORMAT for an INI configuration file that can be used with the attached tool to populate a PropertGrid with parameters and available Enum values etc.

Hope you would consider this and feel free to use any of the ideas or the C# source code.

Welcome Smile
