WPF Studio suite v5.0 is getting close to release

May 13, 2009 at 4:16 AM
by Bill Henning (Actipro)

Sorry we haven’t been blogging much the past couple of weeks.  We’ve been focusing all our efforts on polishing off Editors for WPF and SyntaxEditor for WPF (public beta), both of which will be part of the upcoming WPF Studio v5.0 release.

SampleBrowser

Just to get you excited, I’ve included a screenshot above showing the new product family tabs for Editors and SyntaxEditor.

As a reminder, we have continued to Twitter our progress so be sure to follow us for the latest details on WPF Studio v5.0’s release preparation.

Right now Editors for WPF is ready to go.  SyntaxEditor for WPF still needs several more minor tweaks and documentation updates but it is close now too.  We recently finished off the UI automation and designer functionality along with most of the documentation for SyntaxEditor.

As displayed in the screenshot above, both products are now integrated into the WPF Studio Sample Browser.  C# and VB samples are available for both products.  SyntaxEditor will initially ship with over 40 samples too!

We’re working on another small assembly that we hope to ship with v5.0.  It makes it easy to integrate Editors for WPF with PropertyGrid for WPF.  More details on this in future blog posts.

Another thing we’re trying to quickly hammer out before the release is a first cut at a Language Designer application to be used with SyntaxEditor.  The initial version will likely be limited in functionality but the goal is that we want to make it easy for you to input some data about a language and have this application generate a bulk of the code that you need to implement a syntax language.  We’ll post more about this in future blog entries and definitely will want to get some feedback on it once you get it in your hands so that we can improve it going forward.

Hi Ray,

Could you clarify which product and features you are asking about?  Thanks!

Can we easily move from Forms Syntax Editor to the WPF version?

It depends which features you use.  The object model is similar in some areas and a lot different in others.  However as we implement features, the same features will be available probably plus a lot more functionality.  Still at this time WPF has a subset of what WinForms can do overall.  This will improve as time goes on.  If you run into conversion issues, just post in our forum and we'll be happy to help.  We also ideally would like to have a help topic for aid in coverting.

As for things like moving dynamic language XML definitions over, right now those can be loaded directly.  But that is probably for beta.  We are working on a language designer tool that we plan on having be able to load SE4 dynamic language XML definitions so it can auto convert it for you to a newer format that we settle on.

We will support new themes however Microsoft has a habit of changing things before RTM so we may wait until closer to the next Office's release before implementing it.
